What’s the first thing you should do when you have UTI symptoms?

When I met my friend (let’s call her S) two days back, she told me that she had a burning sensation while peeing. She strongly suspected that she had a UTI. She had all the classic symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs) like pain while peeing, cramps in the back, frequent urge to pee, and the pungent smell of her pee.

I was curious to know how she was and gave her a call.

“So, how is your UTI condition”?
“I am feeling better,” said S.
“I suppose you went to a doctor, and she gave you an antibiotic?”
“No, I didn’t!” said S.
“Hmm, so you are still suffering from the symptoms?”

“No! I chose UTI treatment without antibiotics. I am glad I chose this path. Natural medicine helped me manage my UTI condition.”

This conversation with S intrigued me and I set out to find out how UTI can be treated with plant-based medicine and other such non-traditional methods.

Why natural treatment for UTIs?

The traditional treatment for UTIs prescribed by most doctors is a course of antibiotics. After all, UTIs are caused by bacteria and so antibiotics are needed, right? No! Antibiotics are not the solution always. The problem with antibiotics is the impact the antibiotic side-effects has on our overall health. Frequent antibiotics can actually weaken our immunity, exposing us to the risks of more infections.

Another thing to bear in mind is that 25 to 42 percent of all infections are cleared on their own. So, going to a doctor at the first instance may not be necessary. Instead, you can wait for the infection to clear naturally while using home remedies to obtain relief from symptoms. Thankfully, there are many herbal remedies for UTIs that can help you manage your UTI symptoms effectively.

How to treat UTI the natural way?

If you have a UTI avoid the temptation of rushing to a doctor. Instead, start treating your UTI using natural remedies. These remedies will be of great help in giving you relief from your symptoms. Meanwhile, the infection may well be resolved in a few days. Of course, if symptoms persist you should visit your doctor.

So, what do you do when you suspect you have a UTI? Here is how you can treat your UTI the natural way.

Improve your fluid intake

Fluids (mainly water) can be very helpful in managing your UTI symptoms. When you drink sufficient water, the bacteria are flushed out of your body through your bladder. Diluting your pee will also assist in reducing the burning pain you experience. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water daily.

Add vitamin C to your diet

Vitamin C is an important nutrient that your body needs. Since it is an antioxidant, it can help in creating nitrogen oxide by reacting with nitrogen in your pee. This can help deal with bacterial infections. Add fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C to your diet. This helps you naturally manage your UTI. You may want to avoid red peppers, oranges, and kiwi if they worsen your condition. Add spinach, pomegranate, cherries, and blueberries to your diet.

Consume natural supplements

There are a number of natural supplements that can help in the fight against your UTI. These natural remedies like D-mannose, Sage powder, and Hibiscus flower extract can be very helpful. Products that contain these ingredients can help you obtain relief from the irksome symptoms of your UTI. Try these products along with the other measures listed above. Try these measures immediately when your UTI symptoms first appear.

Good article. It would be helpful to know if I can get enough vitamin C from fruit. My nutritionist has advised against too much because of the sugar content. Should I take a suppliment and what is the right dose?

I am so happy I found this article and now know there are ways to naturally treat UTIs. Honestly, I’ve had different types of antibiotics and I am either allergic to them or I suffer from severe side effects. Once you take a course you have to finish it, no matter how sick it makes you. I just can’t do it anymore.
